The Senior Open Championship

The Senior Open Championship

Marco Dawson of the US will be defending the Senior Open Championship he won in brilliant fashion in 2015, holding off the world’s top players in in Bernhard Langer, Colin Montgomerie, Miguel Angel Jiménez and Fred Couples at when the event was contested at Sunningdale.

Now, those top stars are set to renew their battle over the challenging layout links course at Carnoustie, with around 114 exempt players being joined by 30 qualifiers who emerged from the qualifying event on July 18.

Langer will be attempting to lift the trophy for a second time at Carnoustie, having won there in 2010 while another Carnoustie specialist, Tom Watson, will return to the venue where he claimed The Open Championship at his first attempt 41 years ago. Among those turning 50 ahead of the Championship are former Open Champion John Daly, who will be eligible to make his debut in the event and Jean Van de Velde, runner-up at Carnoustie in 1999.

With the excitement of last week’s Open Championship at Troon when Henrik Stenson carded a joint record eight-under-par 63 to win The Open by three shots after an enthralling final round tussle with Phil Mickelson, with a bit of luck the Senior Open will throw up some great battles and stories as well!

Stenson, 40, birdied four of his final five holes to win his first major with an Open Championship record score of 20 under par at Royal Troon.
Mickelson, 46, had an eagle and four birdies in a 65, while fellow American JB Holmes (69) was third on six under.

Let’s hope that this week Senior Open Championship brings out the best of the senior players – with a bit of luck the weather might stay nice as well!
