Simple Tips for Senior Golfers

Simple Tips for Senior Golfers

I myself being a senior golfer I can relate to all of the ‘ups and downs’ in playing golf so these simple tips for senior golfers will hopefully help you like they help me, whether it be aching bones, ailments that you have had for years and cannot shrug them off, we have to take all of this into account every time we pick up a golf club!

What I tend to do nowadays is to focus on one of two points, basically forgetting about where the club is going, what plane it is on, have I got the right club for the shot I am just about to make, just keep it simple and take it back to basics:

But before I go into the two points I focus on I need to re-emphasise the importance of a good solid golf grip, without a good solid golf grip a lot of your golf shots will never materialise because when you bring your hands and club face back to the ball your club face is far too open or far too closed.

Simple Tips for Senior Golfers - Training Aid

Have a look at this grip and swing training age in a previous article and you will see what a good golf grip should be like, the training aid has a moulded grip to help you achieve that near perfect grip:

1. Keep your head still at all times

I see so many older golfer swinging the golf club and swaying when they take the club back ready for the downswing, this is just asking for trouble, as I said keep it simple, go back to basics, don’t worry where the club is going, keep your head still and just create a nice easy swing, keeping your head still and eye on the ball will inevitably lead to better shots and better striking of the ball. When I am playing bad or below my capability, this is the first thing I address, keeping your head still will lead to a better all round golf game.

2. Think of ‘Trigger’ when taking the club back

What I mean by this is just think of one thing before you take the club back, one I have always used being a right handed golfer is getting my right shoulder out of the way, so imagine you are addressing the ball then all you have to think about is getting that ‘right shoulder’ out of the way, then all the rest of your mechanics that you have learnt over the years will kick into place. Instead of addressing the ball and thinking, take the club back, keep it smooth, keep your eye on the ball, make a good follow through etc, just one simple thought or trigger will help you immensely in achieving a consistent ball strike.

So to summarise my two things I always focus on keeps it pretty simple, keep my head still and just think about one thing, getting my right shoulder out of the way. These might seem like simple ‘beginner’ lessons but, believe me, going back to the basics of the game will help you always and simple drills or thought patterns that you can adapt to on the golf course and not just the range!

    Hi Matt,

Thank you so much for your comments and feedback about my website for the senior golfer, especially your comments about my article simple tips the senior golfers.

In answer to your question about always having your club face open, this could be caused by a couple of things, firstly it could be your grip and it could also be that you are not releasing the club at the right time, do your shots just go off on a right angle?

I originally put this site together because of the lack of good consistent golf tips for the senior golfer on the internet, so it is always nice to get great and positive feedback on my articles, content and videos I have put together for the aspiring senior golfer who wants to improve his or her game into their later years, here is a link to all of my videos in one spot on my website, it covers everything for the senior golfer from the correct golf grip, bunker play, chipping, getting more distance out of your golf shots and much more, would welcome your comments on the golfing tips for the senior golfer once you have watched my videos? Thank you for your tips for senior golfers, I am sure your tips are useful for ages learning to be better golfers. I have never played golf myself, but I do find it interesting game and enjoy reading about the mechanics of becoming a better golfer.

What would you recommend for senior just starting to get into golfing, is being left handed make it more difficult to become a better golfer and is teaching someone to golf left handed more difficult or just the same as teaching someone right handed?

I have just recently started golfing (about a year ago) and I am still learning the mechanics of everything. But the most important thing for me is keeping my head still just like you said. One of the hardest things for me is keeping my club face straight, it is almost always open when i make contact. Any suggestions for that?
