Gene Sauers became the US Senior Open winner after overcoming a life-threatening disease in 2005 to win the US Senior Open Championship 2016 at Scioto Country Club in Ohio, he beat Miguel Angel Jimenez by one stroke to take his first senior major title.
After bad weather had pushed the final round to a Monday finish, Sauers held on bravely to take the title, it couldn’t have happened to a nicer gentleman so well done Gene.
Jimenez being the 54-hole leader let silly bogeys on the final two holes ruin his day when it looked like all he had to do was show up to win the US Senior Open 2016, but it wasn’t to be and Sauers grabbed the opportunity.
After admitting that after the illness he never felt like he would ever hit a golf ball again, he did not play again from 2005 to 2012 then joined the Champions Tour, after winning three times on the US PGA Tour it was only a matter of time before it was his turn.
He shot a final round 69 which was a one under par for the course, he found redemption after missing out on the 2014 US Senior Open title when he missed a similar length putt to lose out to Colin Montgomerie on the 18th green, so once again well done to Gene to making such a hard fought effort to win this US Senior Open title.
With such a lot of big names and super senior golfers in the field, it was a great win for journeyman who overcame so many obstacles to win the golf tournament.
