Rocco Mediate Wins His First Senior Major Title
Rocco Mediate wins his first senior major title
For the Senior PGA Championship at Benton Harbour in Michigan, it was the venue where Rocco Mediate wins his first senior major title – it’s so good to see Rocco back in the winner’s circle once again.
With a stunning 66 on Sunday, he saw him finish on 265 and 19 under par, winning the event wire to wire was always going to see some good scoring from Rocco and he did not disappoint with record-breaking rounds over the whole of the tournament.
With Colin Montgomerie waiting in the wings watching for any hiccups from Mediate which did not eventuate, Montgomerie finished on a respectable 268 for the tournament and finishing the event with a fantastic score of 67 – the last senior golfer to win a major senior tournament was the great Jack Nicklaus in 1991 when he also won the Senior PGA Championship.
In the end it was a just reward for Rocco Mediate having spent a lot of time reconstructing his golf game and also working on his confidence, it has taken a while but now all of that hard work and dedication has paid off for Mediate, at the age of 53 years and a very poor previous 3 seasons on the Champions Tour it all came together in spectacular fashion.
The turning point of his victory came at the 17th Hole where Rocco holed a bunker shot for a birdie to stretch his lead to 3, which he held onto until the end, couple this with some brilliant putting over the 3 days the trophy sort of had his name etched on it from the offset.
With Colin Montgomerie looking a little shell shocked when Rocco holed his bunker shot, you didn’t know whether the Scot was in admiration for Mediate or thinking ‘lucky bugger’ or some other unprintable expletive!
From his opening round of 62 back on the first day you could tell Rocco Mediate meant business and that all of his hard work and dedication over the last three years was finally paying off, this win at the Senior PGA Championship will no doubt be a springboard for brighter days ahead for Rocco, and I say good luck to the man!
With a star studded line up with some Senior Tour Players who could easily still play on the PGA Tour or the European Tour, it makes his comeback even better, he didn’t win by beating an ‘Old Has Been’s’ Line up, he beat a strong field which included the defending champion Colin Montgomerie and also the best player on the PGA Champions Tour Bernhard Langer.
Being winless on the Champions Tour since his rookie season of 2013 seems like a long while off now but the horizon is looking a whole lot better for the great natured Mediate – watch out John Daly Rocco Mediate is closing in on you!
