Lee Westwood and Billy Foster split

After a long association together Lee Westwood and Billy Foster split up their partnership due to a couple of issues relating to yardages and distances on the course, Billy wanted to be involved but Lee just wanted him to carry the golf bag – that scenario was never going to last long!

But now the rumours are suggesting that Billy Foster might be talking to Rory McIlroy about him taking up bag duties for Rory for the 2019 season, after caddying for the likes of Seve Ballesteros, Sergio Garcia and Darren Clarke, but also briefly for the great Tiger Woods – so there might be some mileage to come out of this rumour because Billy Foster has the credentials to caddy for any top tour professional golfer. Lee Westwood and Billy Foster split - Rory McIlroy and Harry Diamond

Westwood won the Nedbank Golf Challenge in Sun City on Sunday, but it was with his partner Helen Storey on the bag, rather than Foster after they parted company after the Turkish Airlines Open.

McIlroy’s current caddie is his best friend Harry Diamond, and he will be on McIlroy’s bag at this week’s DP World Tour Championship in Dubai. But there is speculation that Rory may be tempted to go for the experience that Foster would offer, at a time when he is still struggling to find his best form.

“Lee wanted to work differently to everything we had ever done, which basically meant me just carrying the bag,” Foster said.

“I struggled to adapt to that as a caddie, and it created a bit of an uncomfortable atmosphere on the course. Ultimately, it was no good for Lee and not fair on me.”

Westwood, 45, will reportedly keep his girlfriend on the bag moving forward, including this week at the DP World Tour Championship. The decision means an end to Westwood’s 10-year relationship with caddie Billy Foster, as the two last worked together the week prior at the Turkish Airlines Open.

    Hi There,

Thanks for the comments, yes a relationship between player and caddie is so important, that is why they are splitting up because they no longer see eye to eye during events.

    Cheers and keep in touch.

Hi there, you don’t need to know a lot about golf to understand this situation, let me know what your friend says once he has seen the post about the split?

    Cheers for the comments.

    Hi Brian,

Thanks for the comment, we think the Billy and Rory rumour has a lot of mileage but I doubt anything will happen until the new year when Rory and Billy can have a chat and see if it is a possibility, Rory wants more majors and I am sure Billy Foster could help him achieve that goal!

    Hi Nadia,

Thanks for the comments about this article, we personally think it is time for a change and that the ten year relationship needed to come to end, having his girl friend on the golf bag has proved the point that Lee was trying to make to Billy, carry the bag and leave the rest to me.

    Cheers,

  6. Good caddies are hard to come by, it’s not just about the advice they give you but also keep you calm when the pressure builds up during a tournament, they are worth their weight in gold if you can find the right combination just look at Tiger Woods and Steve Williams, they amassed a lot of tournaments together but even that came to an end.

Sometimes “change is good”, that is why we all occasionally switch out a Putter or Driver. Sometimes the caddie needs a change too? A good life companion can make for a great companion on the golf course. Seems like he made the right call considering he won this week – what are your thoughts?

Wow, that’s very interesting regarding the Lee Westwood and Billy Foster split. Sounds like though Billy won’t be alone for very long if those rumors turn out to be true. It’s amazing though that Lee and Billy had a relationship for 10 years! Do you think that the rumor will actually turn out to be true regarding Billy and Rory?

Wow!  I read the title of this post and thought it was a celebrity gossip post.  I didn’t realise that the relationship between caddy and golfer was so important.  Not being a golf fan, I simply assumed that caddies just carried bags.  Who are the caddies anyway?  How do you pick one?

As you know I don’t know too much about golf, but my best friend does.

After reading this post however, I support the decision of splitting up, it will be better for both.

Now I will show this post to my friend and I will met you know what he thinks about it.

    Thanks for sharing!

I think I might cry. I don’t know much about golf except you hit the little white ball, chase it down yourself and keep hitting and chasing until it goes in the hole. But, and correct me if I am wrong, a golfer and his/her caddie are like a husband and wife correct? The caddie has to be in sync with the golfer, know how he plays, give suggestions and that sort of thing?

If that is the case, then their split before this Dubai game could be detrimental to the golfer having a new caddie?

Wow! A surprising post here. I knwo very little about Golf and thought this an entertainment post. 🙂 How do you get a reputation as a good Caddy? I never knew Golf was so complicated. 🙂
