UK Senior Amateur Championship

UK Senior Amateur Championship

This week we see the top 30 senior amateur golfers teeing it up for the UK Senior Amateur Championship at The Hotchkin Course at the National Golf Centre, Woodhall Spa, it will surely be a memorable 2 day event that will see the elite of UK senior amateur golf take to the fairways to see who will become the Senior Champion of Champions for 2016.

Last year’s winner was Surrey’s Keith Waters who survived a late charge by two senior internationals, one was defending champion Alan Mew and also fellow senior international player Stephen East.

Keith secured his victory with a great score of 73 and a posted total of 3 over par for the 36 holes, but the trophy belonged to Waters and, although he’s won many times in a golfing career which included 16 years on the European Tour, this is a special success.

He held a two-stroke lead after yesterday’s first round 72 and played very solidly today – although the putts eluded him. “I was in complete control of my game and hit some beautiful irons, but I couldn’t hole a putt, I just couldn’t get it in the hole and I didn’t make a birdie all day.”

Mew hit every fairway except one today and, although he felt he could have holed more putts, he rolled in two goods ones for his late birdies.

“I’ve played well and I’ve been very pleased with my performance this week. It’s great to defend and not let myself down,” he said.

Stephen East shot the low score of the championship with his two-under 69, which included a back nine of three-under. He scored his only bogey of the round on the ninth – a long hole where he’d look for a birdie – but came straight back by stiffing his approach on the next and also picked up shots on the 13th and 15th.

That gives you a quick rundown on last year’s event, this year will see a different 30 top senior amateur golfer’s take to the famous course once again, and will include the defending champion Keith Waters whom will no doubt go close again at this year’s championship.
