The US Masters 2018
The US Masters 2018
We are now in countdown mode for the US Masters 2018 at Augusta, the build-up will no doubt surround the return of the new fully fit Tiger Woods and will he be ‘match fit’ for his return to the event to see if he can, in fact, add another Green Jacket to the 4 he has already got in his locker.
With the resurgent Phil Mickelson picking up his first win at the World Golf Championships in Mexico since The Open Championship in 2013 and also Bubba Watson winning at The Genesis Open recently, these two past Master champions will no doubt have other thoughts on Tiger Woods adding another green jacket to his major championship haul.
This year’s US Masters could have so many potential contenders who could actually win this year’s event, not like previous US Masters when you could pick half a dozen players who had a realistic chance of winning the tournament, this year you could name at least 25 players who could win the event if they take their A game to Augusta National.
The US Masters 2018 – potential strong candidates to win
Sergio Garcia – Defending champion and playing some good solid golf at the moment
Justin Rose – Runner Up to Sergio Garcia in 2017 and recently had a month off but you can be sure that he will have a game plan leading up to Augusta
Dustin Johnson – Missed the event last year due to a freak accident days before the event, this year he will be thereabouts on Sunday afternoon, with his length off the tee the back nine at Augusta might just get over powered by this brilliantly accurate golfer.
Rory McIlroy – Rory just wants to add more majors to his current batch, he is cherry picking his events prior to the Masters to make sure is game plan is in order – one to watch
Jordan Spieth – This guy is a machine, hasn’t had such a great start to the year but you can see if he gets his putter working again like he used to then Jordan will be thereabouts at the weekend if he can keep his composure.
Justin Thomas – Jordan Spieth’s great mate and a player that can make things happen at any time during a tournament, you only have to watch his wedge approach shot on his 72nd hole at the World Championships in Mexico to know that he can pull off the impossible – great eagle hole out – definitely a man to watch at this year’s US Masters 2018
Phil Mickelson – After just winning the World Golf Championship in Mexico you can be sure that Phil Mickelson will have an eye on another green jacket, he likes the look and feel of Augusta National you can be sure that the event will get his full attention now he has got that winning feeling back.
Bubba Watson – whatever state Bubba’s game is in you can never discount his chances of picking up another green jacket, he can shape the golf ball, he can hit it long and he has deft touch around the greens, with his recent win at the Genesis Open he is another one who has a strong chance of doing extremely well.
Tiger Woods – If Tiger is really back to full fitness then he really has a good chance of doing well at Augusta this year, his swing speed, club head speed and also ball speeds are out of the charts at the moment so that means just one thing he needs to work on his short game, Tiger knows this and be assured he will be ready physically and mentally for the US Masters 2018.
Jason Day – he has had a bit of a break recently to recharge the batteries, he won the Farmers Insurance Open in San Diego in late January which will be great for his confidence, if he is fully charged back to his old self then Jason Day is another one to watch out for.
Adam Scott – even though he has been pretty quiet of late he can certainly play well at Augusta National for this season’s opening major tournament, he has won the Masters before and he can certainly do it again, the only downside for all of the Aussies playing in the Masters is that Australian’s haven’t really had a lot of luck out of the tournament, but still one to watch if he gets this game going.
Marc Leishman – Marc had a great 2017 whether he can get that playing streak going again in time for the Masters is another question, he has the game and the temperament to do well but I just don’t think his season has kicked off just yet but between now and then he might just kick-start his 2018 season in time for Augusta National in April.
Other potential players that might come knocking on the door if they qualify include Danny Willett (past winner so automatic qualification), Alex Noren, Tyrell Hatton, Chris Paisley, Brian Harman, Paul Casey ( if he can string 4 good rounds together ), Tommy Fleetwood, Rickie Fowler, Jon Rahm and even Matt Kuchar.
Any of the players mentioned in this article have a realistic chance of donning the green jacket come Sunday afternoon at Augusta National, but the ones that stick out will be Tiger Woods, Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth – we are in for a treat come April, so let’s hope it lives up to the hype for the first major golf tournament of 2018.
