Fancy a Lesson from Rory’s Coach

Fancy a Lesson from Rory’s Coach

Well now the secret is out on how and why Rory has such a consistent and powerful golf swing, it was not just down to hard work and real dedication but also down to Michael Bannon, the lifelong coach and mentor to Rory so do you fancy a lesson from Rory’s coach?

He nurtured and developed the youngster’s golfing technique and swing from when he was a little kid of 8 years old growing up in Northern Ireland, to reaching the pinnacle of the sport and becoming the World’s Number 1 Golfer. And, to this day Rory keeps Michael close by his side as he competes all over the world.

Michael is also a superb golfer. Like Rory, he took up golf very young, aged only seven. He rose through the amateur ranks and turned pro in 1981. He won more than 20 titles on the Irish Region Tour. His biggest taste of glory and disappointment came in the 1998 Irish PGA Championship when he lost in a playoff to an emerging star…the one and only Padraig Harrington.

He’s respected in teaching circles — he was named the European PGA Golf Coach of the Year in 2011.

Michael Bannon has a video archive of McIlroy’s swings that spans 15 years and numbers well into the thousands. Each swing was digitised, catalogued by date, and stored on a hard drive. Michael says, “they all tell a different story.” It is a remarkable database of one player’s development. Fancy a Lesson from Rory's Coach - Rory McIIroy

Michael always videoed Rory’s swing. They’d play it back and deconstruct it together, with Michael scribbling all over his small TV screen with a washable marker.

Michael has had offers from clients willing to spend tens of thousands of dollars to fly halfway around the world for just a few private lessons – however his on line golf lessons are now available at a fraction of the cost, which includes:

    Hi Jeff,

Thank you for your in depth analogy of comparing Rory to Jack, I think there are some major similarities between the two golfing greats. I personally think Tiger Woods has got the ability to win another golf major tournament, after seeing him play at the Hero Challenge I saw some really good signs of him getting a stable golf game back, would be great to see Tiger Woods and Rory McIIroy going head to head in major tournaments in the years ahead!

Keep in touch and thanks once again for your comments.

    Hi Adam,

Thank you for your comment regarding my article about Rory McIIRoy’s swing coach Michael Bannon, I am really glad that you have found some really good and useful information out of the article and on line golf lessons. I think Tiger Woods needs to stick to one coach and caddie! Work on slowing down his swing which it seemed like he is like when he played in the Hero Challenge recently, I think if he gets some stability in his coaches, swing, caddie and focus he will certainly be capable of winning another major golf tournament.

    Keep in touch.

    Michael,

I liked your review and preview regarding Michael Bannon’s swing videos. I have spent hours trying to keep it simple. That seems counter intuitive now that I think about it. I have found that the more relaxed, the less I swing hard, and the more routine I use, then I will most likely have a consistent and productive swing.

Thanks for this post, and I look forward to more from you.

What is your opinion on Tiger and all of his swing issues to include the merry-go-round of coaches?

    Michael,

Many of the greatest golfer’s in history for the main part stuck with just one coach throughout most of their careers.

Jack Nicklaus I heard always had the one coach who built his swing early on. I just now looked up his name – Jack Grout. Arnold Palmer had his father who taught him the game and built his swing. Same with some of the current greats – Jason Day whose current caddy Collin Swaton not only was his coach as a youth but a father figure to Jason who had a rough upbringing lacking his own father in his life as a kid.

Your article about Rory was exactly on this same line of thought with his long-time coach Michael Bannon. All of the work that they have put in together to groove such a consistent swing through the years is evidenced by the info that you provided in your article. It also included the fact that the two always film Rory’s swing going back to his youth and then Bannon correcting any inherent faults that existed. I only question Rory’s putting prowess as statistically he is no where near the top in that part of the game compared to other top competitors including Jason Day and Jordan Spieth.

It’s kind of funny, and sad in a way that I believe Tiger’s many swing changes plus the reckless manner in which he went about trying to become like his Navy Seal father and the injuries that he incurred jumping out of military aircraft that led to his downfall since around 2008. I am not one of those individuals who conclude incorrectly that Tiger’s infidelity in marriage to Elin contributed to his downfall as the #1 ranked player in the world. That is because as recently as 2013 long after the marriage was over Tiger was ranked #1 in the world, and he actually won about 5 – 6 tournaments on tour – just not a major. Only right about then did Tiger’s back start acting up.

Tiger went through coach after coach when it really is the thought now that his own dad taught him the essential basics of a proper golf swing. Do you think he has even a chance of winning one more GS Major? Forget about Tiger catching Nicklaus a thought apparently still on his mind after finishing so far behind in his first tournament in 15 some months last weekend. I can’t wait to see how Rory will do next year against the other young guns on tour!

    Hi Michael,

Great article, I think all of us amateur golfers would jump at the chance of getting coaching from someone as high profile as Michael Bannon.

This sounds like a really good opportunity to learn from one of the greats within the game. What level do you have to be within the game to take advantage of the coaching techniques, is this kind of offer restricted to a certain handicap? or can anyone apply for the program?

    Thanks for sharing the article.

Interesting Michael. I’d be interested to find out how his six step lesson ingrains the new swing into muscle memory. I was wondering though, whether they were planning on changing access to the Private Member’s site to be a monthly fee – as it says in the video. Great looking tool for us golfers!

  11. Jess says:

Thanks for the gift idea! With Christmas right around the corner, I know someone who is newer to golfing and would love something like this. Who doesn’t want to improve their swing and their game right?!

Does this include a hard copy manual as well, or downloadable lessons only?
    Thanks for the info!
